Isle of Wight Guide

The Isle of Wight is a county and the largest Island of England situated in the English Channel and approximately 5 miles from the coast of Hampshire, affectionately referred to by its inhabitants as ‘The Mainland’. Once home to the poet Tennyson, Queen Victoria also built her beloved summer home here named Osbourne House in Cowes which became her final residence. The Island has a strong maritime tradition of boat building and sail making and it was here that the first Hovercraft was built. The Isle hosts many annual events but is known for the Famous Isle of Wight Festival, which in 1970 boasted the largest Rock music event ever held.
